Before you start

What is EXIF data?

A block of information your camera or phone writes into the image file alongside the picture. It commonly includes the date and time, the make and model of the camera, its settings, and — if location services were on — the GPS coordinates of where you were standing. Some cameras also record a serial number and the name the camera is registered to.

Do social networks already strip it?

Most large platforms strip EXIF when you upload, but that does not help with a file you send directly. Email attachments, messaging apps that send "as a file", cloud links, Slack, AirDrop and anything you upload to your own site all pass the original through untouched.

Does removing metadata change the image?

No. The pixels are copied across byte for byte. The one thing deliberately kept is the ICC colour profile, because removing it would change how the image looks on screen — a privacy tool that quietly altered your colours would be doing damage in the name of safety.

Is my photo uploaded to check it?

No. The file is read in your browser and nothing about it is transmitted, including the metadata itself. That matters more here than anywhere else on this site: uploading a photo to a server to remove its location is a contradiction, and several well-known tools do exactly that.

Which formats does it handle?

JPEG, PNG and WebP today. PDF and video are not supported yet — rather than half-strip them and hand back a file that might be damaged, they are simply refused.

Can it remove the location only, and keep the rest?

Not yet — it strips the metadata blocks as a whole. Selective removal is a reasonable thing to want and is a candidate for a later version.
